Once again, Palmyra Area School District administrators are talking about joining a new sports league, but this time it’s not the Lancaster-Lebanon League.
Instead, Palmyra and nine other schools — all but two of them former members of the late, great Capital Area Conference — are talking about putting that league back together.
The CAC was a nice, compact, competitive league until its 10 members voted to join the Mid-Penn Conference three decades ago to form a 30-plus team behemoth that now stretches from Lebanon to Franklin counties and from York to Centre counties.
Despite what those cute kids say in that AT&T commercial, bigger is not always better.
Because of the geographic range of the Mid-Penn, teams sometimes don’t return home until near midnight from road games and no one can believe that’s a good idea. Few parents or fans want to make those kind of trips.
So now, possibly, sanity will prevail.
According to a source at one of the schools, the proposed new league would include former CAC members Palmyra, Hershey, Milton Hershey, Lower Dauphin, Middletown, East Pennsboro, Mechanicsburg and Red Land. They would be joined by Cedar Cliff and Northern York (instead of the two other former CAC members, Susquehanna Township and Cumberland Valley).
If the new league does form, it probably won’t begin play for three more years.
This is still a long way from happening, but a reborn CAC sure sounds like a great idea.
